Franz Cell Coupling Adapters

These adapters couple the AquaFlux™ to Franz cell donor chambers for membrane integrity testing. All couplings are calibrated to give in-vivo in-vitro equivalence of measurements.

Apart from the standard couplings illustrated on this page, we can also develop custom designs for other cells, just ask.

1. Couplings to Static Glass Cells

AF007-01:- Coupling to PermeGear 9mm Donor Chamber

This coupling adaptor seals to the outer cylindrical surface of a PermeGear 9mm glass donor chamber by means of a rubber O-ring.

AF007-03:- Coupling to PermeGear 15mm Donor Chamber

This coupling adaptor seals to the inner cylindrical surface of a PermeGear glass donor chamber by means of a rubber O-ring.

2. Couplings to Horizontal In-Line Flow Cells

AF007-04:- Insert for PermeGear 9mm In-Line Flow Cell

This coupling insert seals to the inner cylindrical surface of a PermeGear 9mm horizontal in-line flow cell by means of a rubber O-ring. Note that you need an AF005-08 Standard Clamp Cap (see below) to fix this insert to the AquaFlux™ probe.

AF007-06:- Coupling for PermeGear 12mm In-Line Flow Cell

This coupling insert seals to the inner cylindrical surface of a PermeGear 12mm horizontal in-line flow cell by means of a rubber O-ring.

3. Standard Clamp Cap for Inserts

AF005-08:- Standard Clamp Cap

Use this cap to fix the inserts shown on this page to the AquaFlux™ measurement head. This cap has a 9mm orifice diameter, recessed on the inside, to accommodate the 11mm diameter flange of the inserts.

Clamp caps are now manufactured from a blue plastic in order to distinguish them from similar-looking measurement caps. Do not use clamp caps without inserts for measurement.

Replacement Donor Chambers

Replacement donor chambers can be used to facilitate AquaFlux™ membrane integrity testing when there are problems coupling to standard donor chambers. Problems we have encountered include dimensional inconsistency of glass donor chambers and designs that cannot accommodate any kind of coupling.

The replacement chambers are precision machined from pure PTFE and give highly repeatable push-seals with minimal force. The flange mating face is fine-machined to less than 1 micron surface roughness to ensure a good seal with the membrane. PTFE is chemically inert and can be cleaned and sterilised with detergents, solvents and heat. It is commonly used for flow cells such as the Bronough and Newcastle cells. We can also produce replacement chambers in Kel-F (also known as CTFE or PTCFE). Kel-F is used in Permegear horizontal in-line cells. Kel-F is more expensive and less inert than PTFE, but it can be polished to a milky transparency and this may sometimes be useful.

Apart from the standard donor chambers illustrated on this page, we can also produce custom designs – just ask.

Note 1: You can use this coupling with the equivalent PermeGear glass donor chambers, but the fit will vary from chamber to chamber.
Note 2: Replacement donor chambers are essential, because of substantial dimensional inconsistencies in the PermeGear-supplied glass donor chambers.
